Resolution concerning the use of non-Christian imagery in United Methodist Churches

WHEREAS the purpose of the Church institution is to influence the culture, and not to be

influenced by it; and

WHEREAS the Church is a religious, not a political, institution; and

WHEREAS the Church is meant to uphold the standard of: in essentials, unity; in non-essentials,

liberty, and in all things, charity; and

WHEREAS political statements do not unify, but serve only to divide; and

WHEREAS political opinions do not fall under the category of essential doctrines;

BE IT RESOLVED that no non-Christian imagery or symbols ought to be displayed in churches,

including national flags and political slogans or symbols; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that no sermon ought to be used to argue for a particular political

opinion, party, or policy, but only to issues directly related to Scripture and the Gospel.
