Resolution on the Preaching of the Gospel

WHEREAS the Church is the pillar and ground of truth; and

WHEREAS the Church is commissioned to share the Gospel with all nations; and

WHEREAS many, even in the Church, have never heard the pure Gospel preached; and

WHEREAS this has caused a general diminishing of the spirit in the United Methodist Church;

and

WHEREAS the three ecumenical creeds contain the pure Gospel;

BE IT RESOLVED that, in every opportunity practicable, the sermon be connected in some way

to the Gospel; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Gospel ought to be preached according to the three

ecumenical creeds:

From the Nicene Creed –

“For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit

was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under

Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in

accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of

the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom

will have no end.”

From the Apostle’s Creed -

“Jesus Christ…suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he

descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into

heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will

come to judge the living and the dead.”

From the Athanasian Creed -

“He suffered for our salvation, he descended to hell; he arose from the dead; he ascended

to heaven; he is seated at the Father's right hand; from there he will come to judge the

living and the dead.”
